JAS Aerospace Mexico, in coordination with JAS Peru and JAS Miami, completed a successful transport from the Jorge Chavez Airport to the Queretaro International Airport. The shipment was completed on May 24 and included a CFM56-5B4/3 standard airplane engine. The CFM56-5B4/3 is the world鈥檚 best-selling jet engine and the exclusive engine for Boeing Next-Generation single-aisle airliners. 聽

It is the third engine JAS Aerospace Mexico has transported in 2021. However, it is the first time they handled this kind of sensitive cargo by air. On February 15, the company shipped the first motor. JAS Aerospace moved a second engine on March 1. 聽

Moving a CFM56-5B4/3 engine is a delicate operation due to its size and fragility. The JAS Peru logistics team met every challenge it faced to guarantee the engine鈥檚 safe passage. The engine weighs 4,650 kilograms and is 3.99 meters long, 2.50 meters wide, and 2.25 meters tall. Its shape made it difficult to fit in a standard shipping container. The team used an engine stand to secure it in place during the flight. Engine stands must be lightweight enough to prevent exceeding cargo weight limits for air transport.

There are no direct flights from Peru to Mexico, which posed a final test in moving the CFM56-5B4/3 engine for the JAS Peru team. Collaborating with the logistics teams at JAS Miami and JAS Aerospace Mexico ensured safe transport. It also identified the most reliable and profitable route for the client. 聽

CFM56-5B4/3s are powerful engines with many delicate parts. They are expensive to repair if damaged during shipping. 鈥淛AS Peru鈥檚 qualified professionals can safely and securely handle sensitive cargo that demands zero mistakes or delivery delays,鈥 said Cecelia Galleno, Air Freight Manager for JAS Peru. 鈥淥ur team continues to offer its expertise in providing transport services to customers that comply with target expectations.鈥

JAS Worldwide offers innovative solutions to meet the needs of its logistics and transportation clients. Safe and secure shipping for ocean freight that exceeds standard-size shipping containers and cargo bins is one of our specialties. 聽

JAS Xiamen is pleased to announce its successful first arrangement of a break-bulk vessel. This ocean shipping method was necessary to accommodate a professional offshore technical services enterprise in China. The solution is one of the many ways JAS Worldwide rises to the challenge of today鈥檚 complicated logistics environment. 聽

The safe and secure passage was provided courtesy of a charted vessel outfitted to carry the 290,000-plus kilograms of 300mt Pedestal Mounted Cranes (PMC). The cargo departed from the Port of Zhangzhou, Fujian, with a destination of Qidong, Jiangsu. 聽

鈥淚t is a mark of great success for our team,鈥 said Steven Su, JAS Xiamen branch manager. 鈥淭hey will use the experience gained from this project to develop further logistics businesses in related vertical markets.

JAS ORD, Dog screening demonstration in 2019

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) mandated that, by June 30th, 100% of international all-cargo aircraft flights receive the same level of security screening as cargo shipments on passenger fights.

JAS USA has been working closely with the TSA for several years to implement an in-house process for screening air cargo. As a result, JAS was one of the first freight forwarders approved to conduct trials in its major gateways using canine as a primary screening method. These canine teams can screen palletized cargo without the cargo being taken apart to screen, therefore cutting the screening process from hours to minutes.

Consequently, shipments move much faster through the supply chain with JAS taking control of the screening process and not having to rely on airlines and ground handlers who face some of the following challenges:

  • Screenings taking more time than initially expected.
  • Shipments being left behind by carriers due to incomplete screenings.
  • Some carriers only accepting pre-screened cargo.
  • Full terminals and airport facilities resulting in rejected cargo.
  • Lack of warehouse space for storing cargo as it goes through the screening process.

Over the past year, JAS USA has been working diligently to prepare for this new screening mandate and is excited to see those benefits passed on to its customers. JAS customers who need help navigating these new challenges should contact their local JAS office to learn more about how JAS keeps cargo moving.

Transporting an engine is a delicate operation. Moving an engine via aircraft adds a layer of difficulty that requires expertise, reliability, and commitment to the aerospace sector. 聽

Teams at JAS Mexico and JAS Spain recently partnered to complete the secure transport of an aircraft engine from Mexico City to the Madrid Airport Terminal in Spain. Engine dimensions were 450x250x255 cm. The total weight of the engine was 4,920 kgs. An engine this size required special transport arrangements and supervision during lashing to ensure the cargo鈥檚 safe arrival at its destination. 聽

Ricardo Molinero, Operations Manager for JAS Madrid, said the teams followed a strict procedure designed to avoid damage to the engine鈥檚 inner beadings. 鈥淭hey are very prone to damage if lashing is not done correctly since the engine cradle must, on one hand, be firmly secured to the truck bed but allowing as well some movement, so the inner beadings won鈥檛 break,鈥 he said. 聽

To safeguard the engine鈥檚 delicate inner beadings, the teams adhere to the following protocol:

  • The engine was installed lengthwise in the transport vehicle. 聽
  • The stand base was laid on the truck bed, with the caster wheels and tow bars locked in a stored position. 聽
  • The engine/cradle and cradle/base fastenings were put in place and checked for secureness. 聽
  • The engine installed on the cradle was attached to the shipping base and equipped with shock insulators. 聽
  • The minimum required clearance of 4 inches between the cradle and the truck bed was verified. If clearance space is not confirmed, wood shoring must be placed beneath the transportation base side rails and nailed to the trailer bed to prevent movement that can damage the engine.
  • The shoring was secured to keep it from protruding inboard of the side rails, which can interfere with the vertical movement of the shock mounts or engine cradle. 聽
  • The base only was attached to the trailer bed using tie-down points.

This is the third engine JAS Mexico has transported this year. It is the first time JAS Spain鈥檚 team has collaborated on a logistics job involving an engine. The engine left Mexico City on July 4 and arrived in Madrid on the afternoon of July 7. Delivery was made on July 8 per the customer鈥檚 request. 鈥淭he engine was delivered timely, fulfilling our client鈥檚 tight deadline,鈥 said Molinero.
